Thailand trail running holidays: the complete guide to the Golden Triangle

Hillside temples on the edge of Chiang Mai. Jungle single-track through forest and farmland. A night at a remote Hmong hilltribe lodge, deep in the hills, with nothing around but rice terraces and mountains. Seven days running the trails of Northern Thailand — our newest destination, and one of the most compact, complete adventures in the whole Pure Trails portfolio. Here's everything you need to know.

Charlie Knights September 2026 Destinations Thailand Trail Running

Most visitors to Chiang Mai see it from a café terrace or a temple courtyard. Few realise the trails start almost at the city limits — hillside temple staircases, forest single-track, and mountains rising directly behind the old city walls. This is Northern Thailand as most people never experience it.

We spend seven days running out from Chiang Mai and into the hills, building toward the heart of the trip: a two-day overnight adventure deep into the mountains, staying a night at a remote Hmong hilltribe lodge, and finishing with a pre-dawn climb to one of the region's most spectacular viewpoints for sunrise. This guide covers what the trip actually looks like, day by day, who it's for, and why we think it deserves a much closer look than it currently gets.

Why Northern Thailand?

Chiang Mai is Thailand's northern capital, and its mountain backdrop is not just scenery — it's where this trip actually happens. Most visitors experience the city from ground level: temples, markets, café culture. We run straight up into the hills behind it, into terrain that very few travellers ever see.

The running here is genuinely varied — hillside temple staircases and forest single-track early on, building to jungle and farmland trails, then a proper two-day mountain push to a remote hilltribe lodge and a sunrise summit finale. This is a compact, single-region trip done properly: real mountain running, real cultural depth, and one night that guests will talk about long after the trip ends.

Your route: temples, jungle, and two days in the mountains

// Day 1
Welcome to Chiang Mai

Arrive in Chiang Mai, settle into the hotel with a private transfer included, and meet the group over dinner at a local restaurant — the first taste of Northern Thai cuisine before the running begins the next morning.

// Day 2
Temple trails and sunset at Doi Suthep

An early start at a hillside temple on the outskirts of the city, a staircase climb rewarded with sweeping valley views, then forest single-track back down to the valley. In the afternoon, a visit to the centuries-old Doi Suthep temple, timed to catch the sky turning colour at sunset.

// Day 3
Forests, farmland and jungle, then an evening by songthaew

A longer run further out of the city, through forest, agricultural settlements and dense jungle. In the evening, an included exploration of Chiang Mai by songthaew — the city's converted local pickup trucks — taking in a hidden riverside food spot, bustling markets, and a stop at a local park where the city exercises after dark.

// Days 4-5
Trails & Tribes — a night at a remote hilltribe lodge, and a sunrise summit finale

The heart of the trip. Two days deep into the mountains north of Chiang Mai, with full vehicle support throughout — forgotten trails, an opulent temple at the end of a mountain road, and a valley of terraced rice fields dotted with villages, where a nourishing community lunch awaits. The night is spent at a charming hilltribe lodge, with a barbecue dinner under the stars. The following morning, before daybreak, a mostly uphill trail leads to one of Chiang Mai's most epic viewpoints for sunrise, before a fun, technical descent back to the valley.

Where you'll sleep

For five of the six nights, the trip is based at Phra Singh Village, a Superior hotel set in the heart of Chiang Mai's old city — moments from the temples we run past at dawn. The one exception is the Trails & Tribes overnight, spent at a remote Hmong hilltribe lodge deep in the hills — simple, characterful, and genuinely the highlight of the trip for most guests.

"This is a compact, single-region trip done properly — genuine mountain running, real cultural depth, and one unforgettable night in the hills. It's one of the destinations I'm most excited to bring to the Pure Trails calendar."

How fit do you need to be?

This trip is graded Adventurous, though it asks a little more of you than some of our other cultural-immersion trips. You should be comfortable running or hiking for 2-5 hours at a time on varied, often steep terrain. The biggest physical demand is the Trails & Tribes overnight — two consecutive days covering the trip's longest distances and its steepest climbing, including a technical section on the final descent.

You don't need to be a technical trail runner to enjoy this trip, but a solid, consistent running base will help you get the most from it, particularly across the mountain days. As with every Pure Trails adventure, there's no required pace — a high guide-to-runner ratio means the group can spread out and everyone still gets full support.

Food, culture and practicalities

Thai cuisine is naturally vegetable-forward and full of variety, though fish sauce and shrimp paste are common seasonings even in dishes that look vegetarian at first glance — worth flagging any dietary requirements at the time of booking so we can plan ahead. Chiang Mai's food scene is genuinely excellent, with vegetarian and vegan options widely understood by restaurants used to international visitors.

British, EU, US, Australian and Canadian passport holders can currently enter Thailand visa-free for stays of up to 30 days — plenty for this trip, and at no cost. Thailand's entry requirements have changed more than once recently, so it's worth double-checking closer to your travel date. There are no direct flights from the UK to Chiang Mai — most routes connect via Bangkok or a Middle Eastern hub, with total journey times typically 14-16 hours including the connection.

When to go

We run this trip in late October — right at the changeover from Thailand's rainy season into the cool, dry season. Daytime temperatures typically sit between 26-31°C, with evenings noticeably cooler, particularly at the hilltribe lodge. Worth being upfront: this window sits closer to the tail of the seasonal transition than the settled heart of the dry season, so an occasional shower is more likely than it would be later in the year — most days are dry, but a lightweight waterproof is worth packing as standard kit rather than just a precaution.

23-29 October 2027 — early bird open now, £1,995pp, rising to £2,195pp from 1 November 2026.

Who is this trip for?

Thailand suits guests who want genuine mountain running alongside real cultural depth, in a trip that doesn't ask for the two-week commitment of somewhere like Vietnam or Uzbekistan. It's a compact, complete adventure — ideal for anyone drawn to the idea of a remote hilltribe lodge and a sunrise summit, but who wants that experience within a single, tightly-run week.

Nearly 90% of our guests travel solo, and the shared challenge of the Trails & Tribes overnight in particular tends to forge fast friendships — by the time the group reaches the hilltribe lodge, it rarely feels like a group of strangers any more.
