Transylvania does something to people. The name alone conjures something mythical — and the reality doesn't disappoint. Forested mountain valleys, limestone ridges, medieval cities, and trails that wind between all of it. Over five days we run through the heart of it, from Bucharest into the Carpathians and back.
Three full days of guided trail running take us through the western Bucegi mountains, the Postavaru range above Brașov, and the dramatic limestone walls of the Piatra Craiului National Park — approximately 50km in total with 800–1,200m of ascent per day. Between the running days, we explore Bucharest's Old Town and the medieval streets of Brașov on guided city tours.
This is a compact, accessible adventure — enough challenge to feel like a real mountain trip, enough culture to feel like you've genuinely experienced Romania. Daily distances are deliberately manageable so you can push hard on the trails and still enjoy the evenings.
Night one is spent at the Scala Boutique Hotel (4★) in the heart of Bucharest — an architecturally grand building minutes from the main city attractions. Nights two through four are at either the Drachenhaus or Coroana Brașovului (3★) in Brașov, both overlooking Mount Tampa and the medieval historic quarter. Comfortable, characterful and perfectly positioned.

We run a group transfer from OTP at a set time on the arrival day (late morning — exact time confirmed pre-departure). If you arrive earlier or later, Bolt or Uber from the airport to our Bucharest hotel is easy, convenient and inexpensive. On departure day, group transfer departs after breakfast — please book onward flights from midday or later to allow comfortable transfer time.
July is warm and generally settled across Romania. Temperatures in Bucharest and Brașov typically reach 25–30°C during the day, while the mountain trails in the Bucegi and Piatra Craiului are noticeably cooler — especially at altitude above 1,500m, where temperatures can drop significantly and conditions can change quickly.
We recommend packing a lightweight waterproof and a mid-layer for the mountain days regardless of the forecast. Afternoon thunderstorms are not uncommon in the Carpathians in summer — your guides will monitor conditions and adapt plans accordingly.
Romania's trails are genuinely varied and excellent. Expect a mix of dense forest paths, hard-packed mountain tracks, grassy meadow plateaus and the more technical limestone terrain of the Piatra Craiului ridge on Day 4. Each day has a distinct character — no two runs feel the same.
The daily distances are deliberately manageable (14–18km) but the elevation is meaningful, with 800–1,200m of ascent per day. You should be comfortable with sustained climbing and technical descending. That said, all three days are designed to be run at experience pace — there's plenty of time to stop, take in the views and enjoy the mountains.
Yes — we can cater for most dietary requirements throughout the trip. Hotel breakfasts are easily adapted, and Brașov and Bucharest both have excellent restaurant scenes with good vegetarian and vegan options available.
Please flag any requirements at the time of booking so we can plan ahead. Romanian cuisine is traditionally meat-heavy, but with advance notice we ensure everyone is well fed throughout.
This trip is graded Adventurous and suits runners with a solid base of trail running experience. You should be comfortable running 14–18km on consecutive days with 800–1,200m of ascent and descent on mountain terrain. If you're currently training consistently and can handle back-to-back runs of 90 minutes or more, you're well placed.
We are not a race — the goal is to experience the mountains together. We have two guides on every run which means we can accommodate different paces without anyone feeling left behind or held back. Arrive prepared and the rest takes care of itself.
Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for all guests on this trip. Your policy must cover trail running and adventure activities, medical expenses, emergency evacuation, and trip cancellation or curtailment.
Standard travel insurance often excludes adventure sports — please check your policy carefully before travel. We will ask for your insurance details as part of your pre-departure documentation.
Romania uses the Romanian Leu (RON). Romania is not in the Eurozone, so Euros are not widely accepted for day-to-day spending. ATMs are readily available in both Bucharest and Brașov, and card payments are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and shops.
A daily budget of £20–30 is comfortable for personal expenses, drinks and souvenirs. The Romanian Leu offers excellent value compared to Western Europe.
Romania's Carpathian mountains are home to the largest brown bear population in Europe. Bear encounters on trail are rare, and your guides are experienced in mountain safety in this environment. We run in groups, make noise on the trail and follow all standard best practices for bear country.
This is worth knowing about, not worrying about. Your guides will brief you fully before each day's run. In years of running trips in the Carpathians, our team has never had an incident of concern.
