Arguably the most spectacular seascape on earth — and we're running it from a sailing boat.

The Lofoten Islands stretch some 200km into the Arctic Circle — mountains rising straight out of the ocean towards the sky, shaped and exposed by millennia of crashing waves, ice and snow. It is a fairytale landscape, and we can't think of a more extraordinary place for a trail running adventure.

Our home for the week is the sailing vessel Moondance — a durable 9-berth expedition ship. Each day we drop anchor in a different bay, make our way ashore and run a jaw-dropping trail from one fjord to the next, where Moondance will be waiting on the other side. No two days are the same. Destinations include Kjerringøy, Nordskot, Nusfjord, Henningsvær and the remote island of Værøy — only accessible by boat.

Daily trail distances are flexible — roughly 8–15km — and can be adapted to suit the group. This is a genuinely unique way to explore one of the world's most spectacular wilderness areas, combining two of the greatest freedoms there are: running and sailing.

Everything you need. Nothing you don't.

Arrival day
First sail
Highlights
Welcome to the Lofoten archipelago! Collect your bags at Bodø Airport where your guide will be waiting. Moondance is a 10-minute walk from the terminal in the guest harbour. Please arrive before 17:00 as we aim to begin sailing this evening. We settle in, meet captain Luuk for a skipper's briefing covering the plan, expectations and safety, then set sail towards the picture-perfect village of Kjerringøy for our first night on board.
Day 2 Kvarven Lofoten
Day 02 · Trail Run
Trail Run to Kvarven · Sail to Nordskot
~10–15km
800m+
Highlights
After breakfast we head to the summit of Kvarven on a trail rising through varied terrain with jaw-dropping views from the top — back towards the harbour, across Strandåtind, the Steigen mountains and the great Lofoten wall heading north. We return the same route and shower on board before an afternoon sail (4–5 hours) to Nordskot — a small village in a perfect bay in the Steigen mountains.
Day 3 Nordskot Lofoten
Day 03 · Trail Run
Explore Nordskot · Cross to Hopen
~10–12km
700m+
Highlights
We dinghy ashore and climb Sørskottinden — a beautiful mountain at the heart of this idyllic bay. The trail threads through forests and past mountain lakes before an open ridge approach to the summit with unbeatable views back down to the bay. Back on the beach there's time for a swim before boarding Moondance for an afternoon crossing to the Lofoten side, anchoring in a quiet bay near the village of Hopen.
Day 4 Glomtinden Nusfjord
Day 04 · Trail Run
Run Glomtinden · Visit Henningsvær · Sail to Nusfjord
~15km
650m+
Highlights
We dinghy to a white sand beach and run a circular route on Glomtinden with magnificent views at every turn. Returning to Moondance for lunch, we continue along the archipelago with a stop at the colourful village of Henningsvær for coffee and bakeries before sailing on to Nusfjord — a major highlight of the trip. This quintessential Norwegian fishing village sits in a tranquil natural harbour that feels entirely timeless.
Day 5 Nusfjord Nesland Vaeroy
Day 05 · Trail Run
Coastal Traverse to Nesland · Sail to Værøy
~8km
350m+
Highlights
Morning to wander Nusfjord's old streets — the old bakery is an essential stop. Then an 8km coastal traverse to the small village of Nesland, weaving along coves and forests with fine views of the mountains and sea. Collected by dinghy, we board for lunch and begin the longer open-sea sail to remote Værøy at the very tip of the archipelago — only accessible by boat, and entirely to ourselves for the evening.
Day 6 Vaeroy Lofoten
Day 06 · Trail Run
Mountain & Island Trails of Værøy · Sail to Bodø
~8–10km
500m+
Highlights
Flexible ridge and summit options across Værøy — several ridges lead to summits of 350–430m with stunning views. A traverse of the island takes in white sand beaches and the old fishing village of Mastad, home to abundant wildlife including white-tailed eagles and puffins. After exploring we board Moondance for the final 8-hour sail back to Bodø — time to reflect on an extraordinary week before a last night on board together.

What to expect on the trail — and on the water.
★★★★★
"Trail running from fjord to fjord and coming back to the boat each night felt incredible — wild, remote and still surprisingly comfortable. It's a completely different way to explore the mountains."
Duncan C  ·  Pure Trails Guest · Lofoten 2025
Six days of off-grid trail running with flexible daily distances of 8–15km and up to 800m ascent — coastal paths, forest trails and mountain summits.
Best for runners happy on hilly, sometimes technical terrain — with time to hike the steeper climbs and soak in some of the most extraordinary scenery on earth.
Moondance is cosy and comfortable but still an expedition vessel — expect shared cabins, simple living and a relaxed, team-style atmosphere on board.
Maximum 6 guests — the most intimate Pure Trails experience. A fluid itinerary means every day is shaped by weather, conditions and the mood of the group.

// Good to know
Important notes.

Fly to Bodø Airport, which is well connected via Oslo to airports across the world. We strongly recommend considering the Arctic Circle train from Trondheim to Bodø — it's a bucket-list journey in its own right. You can fly directly to Trondheim from the UK and take the train from there, with the full journey taking around 11 hours from London.

More information about the Nordlandsbanen train route is available at sj.no.

On arrival into Bodø you'll need to make your way to the harbour, which is a short 10-minute walk or a quick taxi ride from the airport. From here you'll board Moondance and your adventure begins.

At the end of the trip we disembark at the same spot, making it easy to get back to the airport for your onward journey.

British, American and Australian citizens can enter and remain in Norway for a maximum of 90 days in every 6-month period without a visa. A visa is not required for other EU passport holders either. We recommend checking the latest entry requirements for your nationality before booking.

We will send you a complete packing list well in advance of the trip so you are clear on exactly what to bring. If you have any questions in the meantime, just drop us a message at explore@pure-trails.com.

Experience in running is a must, but our trips are designed for a broad range of running levels. The best thing about this adventure is its flexibility — every trail can be adapted. Each location offers different trail options ranging from easy to challenging, and your guide will shape the route around the group's skill and fitness level.

Most importantly, our goal is not to run a race but for everybody to experience a beautiful journey.

Living on a sailing vessel is unlike any other type of holiday. We are dependent on the elements, which requires a flexible attitude towards the programme, the people and expectations. The captain guides all decisions and asks for input from the group — guests tend to feel most involved when they participate in everyday activities on board.

We always ask for a flexible and proactive attitude. The space can sometimes feel cosy, which is why we'll regularly check in with you to make sure everything is meeting your expectations. It's an expedition in every sense — and that's exactly what makes it special.
