If you're driving, leave your car at the Coniston Inn for the duration โ€” we'll return you there at the end of the trip. Public transport connections available via Windermere.
One of Britain's great trail running routes. South to north across the Lake District.

From the southern Lakeland town of Coniston to the northern fells above Keswick, this is a point-to-point crossing of one of the UK's finest National Parks. Mountain passes, hidden valleys, ancient woodland, fell summits, and the glittering shores of Derwentwater โ€” all covered on foot over three days of guided trail running.

Over the four days we cover 72km with approximately 2,485m of total ascent โ€” broken into manageable daily stages of 15โ€“27km. Every evening is spent in comfortable 4โ˜… hotels just off the trail, with hot showers, great food and a proper night's rest before the next day's adventure.

A support vehicle is with us throughout โ€” providing luggage transfers between hotels, pop-up aid stations on the route, and the reassurance that nobody is ever far from backup. This is classic Lakeland trail running, fully taken care of.

Everything you need. Nothing you don't.

What to expect
Welcome to the Lake District! Check in to the Coniston Inn from 15:00 โ€” the hotel is just a third of a mile from Coniston village and easy to reach by public transport or car. The Pure Trails team will be in the bar from 18:00 for drinks, kit checks and introductions. We'll sit down for a group dinner at 19:30 with a full briefing about the days ahead. An early night is recommended โ€” Day 2 is the biggest of the trip.

Day 02 ยท Trail Run
Coniston to Rosthwaite via the Langdale Valley
~27km
1,000m+
Highlights
The biggest day of the crossing. We set off from Coniston village, picking up trails heading north via the tranquil shores of Tarn Hows โ€” a stunning opener. The trail continues through woodland alongside the Brathay River to Skelwith Falls before formally entering the Langdale Valley. Remote mountain trails take us up the zigzagging Stake Pass, then a long descent carries us all the way down into the Borrowdale valley and the finish at Rosthwaite. Transfer to Keswick for check-in, dinner and well-earned rest.

Day 03 ยท Trail Run
Rosthwaite to Keswick via Cat Bells
~15km
600m+
Highlights
A shorter but beautiful day. After a group transfer back to Rosthwaite, we follow woodland trails to Castle Crag โ€” the smallest of the Wainwright Fells โ€” passing Millican Dalton's famous hermit cave on the way. The trail continues along tranquil rivers and over hillsides to the southern tip of Derwentwater, then climbs steeply to the ridge and summit of Cat Bells (451m), with some of the finest views in the Lake District on a clear day. A careful descent meets the van, then a flat shoreline trail flows all the way along Derwentwater into Keswick, finishing at the steps of the Moot Hall.
Skiddaw Lake District Pure Trails
Day 04 ยท Trail Run & Departure
Keswick to Nether Row via Skiddaw Haus
~20km
885m+
Highlights
The final day and a fitting finish to the crossing. We run north directly from the hotel through Keswick to the base of Latrigg Fell, then navigate between the twin Lakeland giants of Skiddaw and Blencathra to the remote Skiddaw Haus hostel โ€” once ancient forest, now open heather and fell. Past the medieval Grainsgill Beck mines, a final ascent leads to Lingy Hut and the summit of High Pike (658m) โ€” the northernmost point of the National Park. A long grassy descent carries us into the pretty village of Nether Row: crossing complete. Transfer back to Keswick (~30 mins) to collect cars or connect with onward transport.
Two great bases for the crossing.

"A brilliant few days running across the Lake District. Stunning route, excellent guiding and support โ€” everything was thought of so we could just run, eat and enjoy the views."
Andy S  ยท  Pure Trails Guest ยท Lake District
Three full trail days covering 15โ€“27km with 600โ€“1,000m of ascent each day โ€” a genuine south-to-north crossing of the National Park on fell paths, mountain tracks and shoreline trails.
Graded Moderate โ€” best for runners comfortable on their feet for 3โ€“6 hours, happy to hike the steeper climbs and take in the views rather than chase pace.
Three nights in 4โ˜… hotels with proper beds, hot showers and good food every evening. This is not a camping trip โ€” you recover in comfort and run better for it.
Full support throughout โ€” two qualified guides, a support vehicle, luggage transfers between hotels, and aid stations on the route every day. You carry a light daypack only.

Important notes.

If you are driving, you can leave your car in the hotel car park at the Coniston Inn for the duration of the trip. When the adventure wraps up we will return you to Coniston to reunite with your vehicle.

If you are travelling by public transport, we suggest taking a train to Windermere and connecting with the hourly bus to Ambleside (or a taxi), then an onward bus to Coniston. For the return journey, we can point you to the right bus stop in central Keswick for connections to Penrith train station.

Check out from the Coniston Inn and be ready in your trail running gear for a 9:00am start โ€” we set off directly from the hotel. Our support vehicle will be parked outside for you to load any luggage and additional items, which will be transferred ahead to our hotel in Keswick and waiting on your arrival later that afternoon.

We depart after breakfast at around 9:00am and are typically on the trail for 3โ€“5 hours, covering between 15โ€“27km depending on the day. This is not all-out running โ€” we make regular stops to take in the views, grab photos and get the most from the landscape around us.

Two trail guides are with the group throughout, allowing everyone to move at their own comfortable pace. A picnic lunch is carried with us each day, and the support vehicle is stocked with water, snacks and nutrition at aid points along the route.

We run in mid-summer when the countryside is lush and green. Average temperatures sit around 20ยฐC, though you should be prepared for anything from a warm spell of 25ยฐC to a cooler 15ยฐC โ€” this is Britain, after all. The Lake District is also known for its rain and wind, and in the mountains it's not unusual to experience four seasons in a single day.

Please pack accordingly and dress in layers. We'll share a detailed kit list in advance to make sure you have everything you need whatever the conditions throw at us.

Throughout the adventure a support vehicle accompanies the group each day, serving as a pop-up aid station at intervals along the route. It's stocked with water, snacks, lunches and nutrition, and you can also use it to store any luggage or kit you don't want to carry.

If at any point someone decides they don't want to continue, they can hop in the vehicle and be transferred ahead to rejoin the group at a later point on the route โ€” or simply be taken back to the hotel to rest and relax for the remainder of the day.
