OUR ITINERARY

DAY 1 | ARRIVE PARO - THIMPHU & DEBSI TRAIL RUN

TRAIL RUNNING: APPROX. 7 - 10 KM / 150 - 200M+

Arrive at Paro International Airport, where your personal guide and driver will greet you with a traditional khadar (ceremonial scarf) and a warm welcome drink: Ara (local moonshine) or Suja (butter tea).

Begin your scenic 1-hour drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital (∼2,300m elevation), with light refreshments and hydration provided in the car, perfect for easing into the altitude and mountain terrain.

Check in to your hotel and take some time to rest and settle in.

In the afternoon, we’ll embark on the Kuenselphodrang–Debsi Trail (approx. 7 - 10km) — a gentle round-trip trail run that begins near the base of the iconic Buddha Dordenma statue. We will route through a forest of over 108,000 trees, planted to commemorate the birth of Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen (Queen of Bhutan). The trail offers great views of the entire Thimphu valley.

Return to our hotel with a group dinner and time to relax.

DAY 2 | THIMPHU - WANDITSE TRAIL

TRAIL RUNNING: APPROX. 6KM / 250M+

After breakfast, we'll start the day on the Wanditse Lhakhang trail, heading to an ancient temple offering panoramic views of the Thimphu valley.

Originally built in 1750, Wanditse is dedicated to the guardian deities of Bhutan and serves as a spiritual protector of the region. We'll then continue to the nearby Takin Reserve, home to Bhutan's national animal — the takin — a rare and curious creature believed in legend to be created by the Divine Madman, Drukpa Kunley.

In the afternoon, we'll explore Thimphu town: Visit local markets and handicraft stores for traditional textiles, handmade crafts, Bhutanese art, or a selection of museums.

DAY 3 | ACROSS MOUNTAIN PASSES TO THE SACRED VALLEY OF PUNAKHA

TRAIL RUNNING APPROX: 5KM+ / 140M+

After breakfast, depart Thimphu for a stunning drive to Punakha (2-hour drive), Bhutan’s former capital and lush river valley known for its temperate climate, rice fields, and sacred river confluences. The route winds through mountain landscapes and iconic spiritual landmarks.

We’ll stop at the Dochula Pass (∼3,100m), home to 108 chortens built in honor of Bhutanese soldiers who died in battle. On clear days, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the snow-capped Himalayan range, a perfect setting for a short walk around the chortens.

Before reaching Punakha, we’ll visit Chimi Lhakhang (Fertility Temple), a quirky yet sacred temple revered by locals seeking fertility blessings. We’ll also visit Punakha Dzong, considered Bhutan’s most beautiful fortress, strategically built between two rivers, Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu.

On arrival in Punakha, we’ll check into our hotel with some time to relax, with a planned run later this afternoon along the Mo Chhu riverside.

DAY 4 | ARRIVAL IN THE VALLEY OF STILLNESS - GANGTEY

TRAIL RUNNING: APPROX. 5KM / 100M+

Leaving Punakha behind, we set off on a scenic drive into Bhutan’s spiritual highlands. The journey ascends steadily through pine forests and scattered chortens, with occasional sightings of yaks grazing along the roadside.

The drive to Gangtey takes approx. 3 hours, where we’ll make stops en route to see the Lawala Pass (∼3,300m), where we’ll see fluttering prayer flags and snow-capped peaks on the horizon.

Arriving in the Gangtey Valley, we’ll visit the Gangtey Monastery (Gangtey Goenpa), the spiritual heart of the valley and a key center of the Nyingma tradition, perched dramatically above the valley floor.

We’ll take the opportunity for an easy-paced trail run of Gangtey (approx. 5km), heading through villages, passing Bhutanese homes, prayer wheels, and yak pens.

Check in to your lodge, where warm hospitality awaits. Sip on herbal tea by a crackling fire and, if you wish, try Bhutanese archery with local guides.

DAY 5| RUN THROUGH SERENITY - THE LONTEY TRAIL EXPERIENCE

TRAIL RUNNING: APPROX. 15KM / 400M+

Wake to sweeping alpine silence and crisp mountain air.

Today’s journey is a loop through one of Bhutan’s most peaceful and photogenic landscapes, often referred to as the "Switzerland of Bhutan": the Gangtey Nature Trail (15km).

We’ll set off on our trail that locals call the ‘path of stillness’ — a gently rolling route that flows through pine forests, open meadows, and past sacred sites. We’ll spot traditional villages and yak herder camps, offering a glimpse into rural highland life with the chance to spot black-necked cranes (in season) gliding silently above.

Returning to our hotel with some time to freshen up, with a planned afternoon excursion to a local weaving cooperative to witness traditional Bhutanese textiles being handwoven. We’ll then return to Punakha.

Check in to our hotel with the rest of the day to relax.

DAY 6 | SACRED STRIDES - TRAIL RUN KHAMSUM YULLEY

TRAIL RUNNING: APPROX. 5KM / 200m+

Start your morning with a journey into Bhutan’s spiritual heartland. After breakfast, set out for a short transfer to the lush rice paddies of the Punakha Valley — a region where ancient temples rise from fertile farmland and rivers weave through Himalayan foothills.

We’ll then run the Khamsum Yulley Trail Run (5 km round trip). Today’s highlight is a short yet invigorating trail run to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, a stunning hilltop temple built by the Queen Mother for peace and protection in the world.

After our run, enter the chorten for a quiet moment of mindfulness or a guided introduction to Bhutanese Buddhist symbolism.

We’ll have lunch at a nearby village farmhouse — a culinary immersion into Punakha’s earthy flavors and generous hospitality.

In the afternoon, continue with a peaceful run through the valley floor, weaving past golden paddy fields, fluttering prayer flags, and village homes. This route is ideal for photography, slow-paced runners, or those craving an extended cool-down in nature.

Late afternoon, return to your hotel for a relaxed evening, then head back to Thimphu.

DAY 7 | HIGH ALTITUDE - TRAIL TO PHAJODING MONASTERY

TRAIL RUNNING APPROX: 16KM / 800m+

After an early breakfast, lace up your trail shoes for one of the most iconic trails in the Thimphu region — a journey to Phajoding Monastery, one of Bhutan’s most sacred meditation retreats perched at 3,600 meters (∼11,800 feet) above sea level.

This is a challenging but rewarding ascent, passing through pine forests, prayer flags, and traditional rest stops used by monks and pilgrims.

Along the way, we’ll stop at ancient meditation huts used by solitary retreat monks and may spot wild goats and rare bird species.

Arrive at Phajoding Monastery, a revered 13th-century spiritual site founded by the saint Phajo Drugom Zhigpo. Still used today by monks in long-term retreat, the site exudes stillness and sacred energy. Explore the temple complex, receive a blessing from the monastery’s monks, and take it easy with a packed lunch while we soak up the view.

We’ll descend back to Sangaygang. The downhill trail is easier on the legs and offers more time to appreciate the quiet of the forest and distant chimes of temple bells.

DAY 8 |RETURN TO THE SACRED VALLEY - THIMPHU TO PARO

TRAIL RUNNING: APPROX. 5KM / 150M+

Enjoy a relaxed breakfast before setting off on a 1.5-hour scenic drive to Paro. The route traces winding rivers and forested hills, with your guide offering stories that weave together Bhutan’s past, present, and spiritual roots.

We’ll stop at the Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan. Light butter lamps and offer quiet prayers ahead of tomorrow’s final trail to the Tiger’s Nest. Explore the temple’s ancient corridors, said to pin down the demoness that once blocked Buddhism from spreading in Bhutan.

In the afternoon, we’ll head out on an easy trail along the Paro Chhu River, past farmhouses, prayer flags, and locals tending to their fields.

We’ll settle into our final lodge of the journey — ideally a peaceful retreat on the outskirts of Paro with views of the upper valley.

DAY 9 | THE SACRED SUMMIT - PILGRIMAGE TO THE TIGER’S NEST

TRAIL RUNNING: APPROX. 6KM / 520m+

Today, take your final and perhaps most meaningful steps on Bhutanese soil. The trail to Taktsang Monastery, dramatically perched on a cliffside 900 meters above the Paro Valley, is more than a physical ascent; it is a spiritual pilgrimage and a moment to reflect on the personal journey that brought you here.

After an early breakfast, drive 25 minutes to the base of the Taktsang trailhead (6km). The trail heads through pine forests into the clouds — each step bringing you closer to one of the most sacred sites in the Himalayas.

Cross a stone stairway and a waterfall bridge before reaching the final staircase that leads to Taktsang Monastery itself. Inside, explore the shrines dedicated to Guru Rinpoche, who is said to have flown here on a tigress’s back to subdue evil spirits; the meditation caves used by monks and yogis for centuries; and butter lamp offerings and ancient murals glowing with myth and reverence.

The rest of the afternoon is set aside for a stroll through Paro town, last-minute souvenir shopping, or simply enjoying quiet time at our lodge with mountain views.

We will have a closing circle and farewell dinner where we’ll gather, a moment to share reflections, express gratitude, and close the journey with intention. End the night with music, stories, or quiet stargazing under the Bhutanese sky.

IMPORTANT NOTES

+ GETTING TO BHUTAN: FLIGHTS & ENTRY POINTS

Bhutan is primarily accessible by air through Paro International Airport, the country’s sole international gateway. Nestled at an altitude of 2,225m (7,300 ft) and surrounded by dramatic Himalayan peaks reaching up to 4,876m (16,000 ft), the descent into Paro Valley is widely regarded as one of the most breathtaking flight experiences in the world.

Only two airlines operate flights to Bhutan: Drukair and Bhutan Airlines. The journey to Paro offers spectacular aerial views of the Himalayas, including (weather permitting) four of the world’s five highest peaks—Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Kangchenjunga.

To make your journey seamless, all flights to and from Bhutan from Bangkok are included in the cost of the adventure. We take care of the bookings with Bhutan Airlines or Drukair, ensuring a smooth and stress-free arrival experience.

Please note, however, that onward international travel to/from Bangkok is excluded and you are responsible for arranging this.

+ TOURIST VISA & SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT FEE (SDF)

To enter Bhutan, all international travelers are required to obtain a visa and pay a Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)—a government initiative aimed at promoting responsible tourism and preserving Bhutan’s unique environment and culture.

All visa and SDF costs are included in our adventure, so you don’t have to worry about separate payments or paperwork—we’ll take care of everything for you.

+ I HAVE DIETARY REQUIRMENTS, CAN YOU CATER FOR IT?

Absolutely. We can cater for all dietary requirements on this trip; please just let us know in advance so that you are appropriately catered for.

+ WHAT IS THE TERRAIN LIKE?

Bhutanese trails vary greatly, from well-trodden paths connecting villages and monasteries to more rugged, technical terrain in higher mountain passes.

You can expect everything from lush forests, riverside trails, rocky and uneven paths, and steep ascents and descents, all the while with stunning views of the Himalayas and pristine landscapes.

We'll spend good time descending and ascending, but with very manageable daily distances, we've made this trip suitable for all abilities.

+ WHAT FITNESS IS REQUIRED FOR THE TRIP?

This trip is suitable for all abilities of runner, but you should have a base level of fitness to be able to handle a selection of days running.

Our goal is not to run a race but for everybody to experience a beautiful journey.

+ WHAT ABOUT IF THE GROUP HAS A MIXTURE OF RUNNING ABILITIES?

Every trip we have ever run has a mixture of people and running abilities. These are NOT training camps, but adventures that are designed for an experience. You can expect a lot of stops, and a lot of laughter each day.

We also have two running guides on this trip, which means we can accommodate different paces with zero pressure around how fast or slow you'd like to run.
