The Best Trail Running Vacations in Europe (And Beyond) for 2026–2027
You've run the trails near home until you know every root and switchback by heart. You've thought about racing abroad but what you actually want is something different — a week on trails you've never seen, in mountains you can't find at home, with a small group of people who get it. This is the guide to the trail running vacations worth flying across the Atlantic for.
A trail running vacation is not a race trip. It's not a training camp. It's a week or more spent running extraordinary trails in places most people never reach on foot, with guides who know the terrain and a small group who share your pace and your appetite for adventure.
That's what we do at Pure Trails. Since 2019 we've taken over 500 runners to thirteen destinations across three continents. The trips are fully guided, fully supported, and designed for runners of all experience levels — from people logging their first miles off-road to ultramarathon veterans chasing their next obsession.
If you're looking for a trail running vacation in 2026 or 2027, here's every destination we run — honestly assessed, so you can find the one that fits.
What's included in a Pure Trails running vacation?
Before we get into destinations, here's what every trip includes so you know what you're comparing. All accommodation. All guided running days with two or more expert trail guides. All local transfers and logistics. Luggage transport between bases so you run with a light daypack. Trip-specific route notes and a pre-departure kit guide. And a small group — never more than ten runners.
The only things not included are your flights and travel insurance. Everything else is taken care of.
Most of our European trips are based in destinations well connected to major international airports. Naples for Amalfi, Palma for Mallorca, Tbilisi for Georgia, Tirana for Albania. Direct flights from the US East Coast to most European hubs run six to eight hours. We recommend arriving a day early to shake off the jet lag — and we're happy to recommend pre-trip accommodation near the start point.
European trail running vacations
Europe is where most of our trips take place, and for good reason. The trail infrastructure is world-class, the food is exceptional, the scenery is extraordinary, and the logistics are simple. Here's what we're running.
Five days running the Italian coastline from Sorrento to Amalfi, including the iconic Path of the Gods — a clifftop trail with the Tyrrhenian Sea hundreds of meters below. Lemon groves, ancient villages, and evenings spent at long tables with local wine and fresh pasta. This is our most popular trip and the one we recommend most for first-time guests. The trails are accessible, the culture is unforgettable, and the group bonding happens fast over aperitivos at sunset.
The Serra de Tramuntana is a UNESCO World Heritage mountain range running along Mallorca's northwest coast. Ancient stone paths connect mountain villages through pine forests, along exposed ridgelines, and down to hidden Mediterranean coves. Four days of immersive trail running with a boutique hotel base in Port de Sóller — pool, harbour restaurants, and the kind of post-run swim that resets everything. Accessible enough for newer trail runners, rewarding enough for experienced ones.
Albania is the trip that surprises everyone. The Accursed Mountains of the Albanian Alps are genuinely wild — empty trails through remote villages, Blue Eye pools, ancient Roman ruins, and some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in Europe. Almost nobody from North America has heard of this destination, which is part of its magic. The food is exceptional, the people are warm, and the trails are ours alone. This is the trip guests talk about for years.
Seven days in the Dolomites — the most visually dramatic mountain range in Europe. The Tre Cime di Lavaredo, the ethereal towers and spires, the high alpine passes that open up views so vast they feel unreal. This is our most ambitious European trip. The terrain is more technical, the days are longer, and the reward is a week immersed in scenery that belongs on another planet. For runners who want to be genuinely challenged by the mountains.
Nine days in the Greater Caucasus Mountains of Svaneti — a region most Americans have never heard of and very few Westerners have ever run. Medieval stone towers, glacier-fed rivers, wildflower meadows that stretch to the horizon, and mountain trails that feel like the Alps before anyone found them. Georgian food is extraordinary — long feasts of khachapuri, khinkali, and local wine that last deep into the evening. This trip surprises people more than any other.
Five days in the Carpathian Mountains — gothic castles, forested valleys, and trails through landscapes that look like they belong in a fairy tale. Transylvania is far more than the Dracula myth. The running here is beautiful and varied, through wildflower meadows, dense woodland, and past medieval fortifications that have stood for centuries. An accessible trip with a genuine sense of mystery and discovery.
Volcanic peaks, desert canyons, pine-forested ridges, and a summit at nearly 1,900 metres — all on an island most people only know for its beaches. Gran Canaria hosts the Transgrancanaria ultramarathon every February. We run sections of those routes at a pace that lets you enjoy them. The highlight: lunch in a cave restaurant carved into the wall of the Guayadeque Canyon. Launching in 2027 with March and October departures.
"Likeminded people, hugely experienced guides, and heaps of laughter. Everything I had hoped for and more. These are really special trips from a company that cares. It was magic." — Abbie L, Mallorca, May 2026
Trail running vacations beyond Europe
Some of our most powerful trips take runners beyond Europe entirely — to the Himalayas, to Southeast Asia, and to Central Asia's Silk Road. These are longer, more immersive experiences that combine world-class trail running with deep cultural encounters you simply won't find on a European trip.
Ten days from the mountain trails of the north to the limestone karsts of Ha Long Bay. Rice terrace running, jungle trails, overnight homestays with local communities, and a luxury cruise through one of the natural wonders of the world. This trip sold out in ten days when we launched it. We run it in February, when northern Vietnam is cool and dry — perfect conditions for the trails and a welcome escape from the North American winter.
Nine days running the ancient Silk Road — from the turquoise-tiled cities of Samarkand and Bukhara to mountain trails through the Western Tien Shan range. Uzbekistan sits in Central Asia, over two thousand miles from the Middle East, and is rated safe for travel by all major government advisory services. The culture is mesmerizing, the hospitality is extraordinary, and the trails are entirely empty. This is the trip that makes people rethink everything they thought they knew about this part of the world.
The Himalayas need no introduction. Our Annapurna trip takes runners deep into the world's most famous mountain range — through terraced hillsides, rhododendron forests, and along trails with views of 8,000-metre peaks that stop you in your tracks. This is a trip that changes how you think about running and what the mountains can mean to you. Altitude, remoteness, and a sense of scale that nowhere else in the world can match.
Our most ambitious trip. Fifteen days circumnavigating Manaslu — the world's eighth-highest mountain. This is expedition-grade trail running through remote Himalayan valleys, across high passes above 5,000 metres, and past landscapes that very few Westerners have ever seen on foot. Not for beginners. For runners who've done the other trips and are ready for the big one.
UK trail running weekends
Not every running vacation needs a long-haul flight. We run shorter trips in some of the finest trail running terrain in the UK — perfect for a quick reset or as a taster before committing to a bigger adventure.
Four days crossing England's most dramatic National Park on foot. Fell running, lake swimming, mountain passes, and some of the finest pub food in the country at the end of each day. A compact, accessible trip that punches well above its weight.
A weekend on one of Britain's most dramatic moorland landscapes. Remote, rugged, and remarkably beautiful. The perfect introduction to Pure Trails if you want to experience what we do before committing to a longer trip abroad.
How to choose the right trail running vacation
With thirteen destinations it can feel overwhelming. Here's how we help people decide.
If you've never done a guided running vacation before, start with Amalfi, Mallorca, or Exmoor. They're accessible, the terrain is manageable, and the group culture is especially welcoming to first-timers.
If you want genuine adventure and remoteness, look at Albania, Georgia, or Uzbekistan. These are destinations that most people haven't heard of, let alone run in. The trails are wilder, the culture is richer, and the sense of discovery is real.
If you want a once-in-a-lifetime experience, Nepal and Vietnam are in a category of their own. Longer trips, deeper immersion, and the kind of memories that reshape how you think about travel and running.
If you're traveling solo, every single one of our trips works. Over 90% of our guests arrive alone. It's what we're built for. Read our complete guide to running vacations for singles.
