Running Vacations: How They Work and What They Cost
A running vacation is a few days to two weeks of guided trail running somewhere extraordinary, with everything except your flights taken care of. Here is how one actually works, who goes, and what you should expect to pay in 2027.
If you are searching for a running vacation, a running holiday, a trail running trip or a running retreat, you are looking for the same thing under different names. In the UK we say holiday and in North America people say vacation, but the idea is identical: you travel somewhere with great trails, run with a guide and a small group, and leave everything else to someone else.
I have been running these trips since 2019. Pure Trails has taken more than 500 runners to thirteen destinations across three continents, and the same questions come up every time. Is it for someone like me? How does it actually work? What does it really cost? This guide answers them honestly.
What is a running vacation?
A running vacation is a trip built around trail running, usually between four and fifteen days, with accommodation, guided running, local transport and most meals organised for you. You run each day with a guide who knows the route, then spend the rest of the time eating, resting and exploring. There is no race and nobody is timing you.
A training camp is about getting fitter. A race trip is about competing. A running vacation is about the place and the experience, with running as the way you see it. A running retreat is the quieter end of the same idea, with more rest built in. If you want a PB, go to a camp. If you want to see somewhere extraordinary on foot, this is it.
How a running vacation works, from booking to the last dinner
You pick a destination and a date, and a small deposit holds your place. The balance is paid in instalments before you travel, so the cost is spread across the months in between.
Before you go you get route notes, a kit list and training guidance for your trip. Our packing list and training guide cover what most people ask about.
You get yourself to the start point and we handle transfers from there. Most days follow the same rhythm: breakfast together, a guided run with a light daypack, an afternoon to recover, and a long dinner at a local table. Your bigger luggage moves between bases for you.
The only things you organise are your flights, your travel insurance and any personal kit. Everything else on the trip is handled.
Who goes on a running vacation?
Probably not who you expect. Our guests include GPs, teachers, engineers, retirees, parents whose children have left home and people mid career change. The youngest has been 24 and the oldest 68. Some have run ultramarathons. Some had barely left a pavement before booking.
The biggest worry is being the odd one out, and it almost never happens. More than 90% of our guests arrive alone. Shared accommodation is standard, groups are small, and by the end of the first day nobody is a stranger.
"Arrive solo, leave as friends. True statement!" — Heather J, Albania, June 2026
How fit do you need to be?
It depends on the trip, which is why every one carries a grade. Our shorter UK and Mediterranean trips suit anyone who runs regularly and enjoys being outdoors. Our big mountain trips ask for more: for Albania, for example, I tell people to be comfortable running 20 to 30 kilometres a week with some hills. Check the adventure grades to find the right level for where you are now.
Nobody is left behind and nobody is held back. You run at your own pace with a guide, and walking the steep sections is part of trail running, not a failure of it.
What does a running vacation cost in 2027?
Our 2027 trips run from £895 to £2,795 per person. That works out at roughly £180 to £330 a day, covering accommodation, guided running, local transport and (on most trips) meals. Prices are per person in pounds sterling, and trips with a longer stay or a harder logistics chain sit towards the top.

What is included, and what is not
Every trip includes accommodation, guided running days with expert trail guides, local transfers and logistics, and luggage transport between bases. Meals are included on most trips, with the specifics set out on each trip page. Flights, travel insurance and personal spending money are not included. If you want a room to yourself, a single supplement applies on most trips (for example £225 on the Isle of Man and £295 on the Lake District).
How the pricing works
We open a new trip with a limited early bird window, and when it closes the price goes up. We do not discount trips once they are on sale, so the early bird is usually the lowest price you will see. Booking early also spreads the cost over more months. I wrote about why in why autumn is the best time to book.
Is it worth it compared with going alone? You can absolutely run these places yourself. What you are paying for is the planning, the local guides, the logistics and the group. I have been honest about that trade-off in is a guided trail running holiday worth it.
Which running vacation is right for you?
If it is your first guided trip, start with the Isle of Man, Mallorca or the Amalfi Coast. They are manageable, social and a gentle introduction. The UK trips are the lowest-risk way to try it.
If you want winter sun, Gran Canaria in March is running in 22 to 25 degrees while the UK is grey.
If you want something wild, Albania, Georgia and Uzbekistan are remote, rich in culture and almost empty of other runners.
If you want a once-in-a-lifetime trip, Vietnam, Thailand and the Nepal trips take you furthest from everyday life.

Common questions
Do I need to be an experienced trail runner?
No, but you do need a reasonable running base, and the base depends on the trip. Each trip has a grade so you can choose one that suits your level today.
What if I am slower than everyone else?
It does not matter. You run at your own pace with a guide, nobody is timing anything, and the group is built around enjoying the trail, not racing it.
Is it safe to travel alone?
Most of our guests do. Accommodation is shared, groups are small and our guides look after everyone. Many guests keep in touch long after the trip.
How far ahead should I book?
As early as you can. Groups are small, so the popular dates fill first, and booking early spreads the payments over more months.
Is a running vacation the same as a running holiday?
Yes. "Holiday" is the British word and "vacation" is the North American one. Both describe a trip built around running somewhere beautiful.
What if I want to talk it through first?
You can book a free 10-minute call with us. It is an honest conversation about which trip fits your level and your plans, with no sales pitch.
